About Us
While committed to the educational advancement of the region, Sturgeon Adult Learning is not an institutional centre, nor do we offer a traditional classroom environment. As supporters, advocates, and allies of individual and group learners within the Sturgeon Region, we embolden those struggling or hesitant to use their words, appreciate and find their voice, their place, or just their next steps.
In the setting and strengthening of literacy, numeracy, digital, and foundational learnings through the provision of resources, information, and education for adult learners, we work to empower and connect people and community.
Here, people are finally–truly–seen and heard, and family and societal roles and expectations are set, recognized, and comprehended in order for individuals, groups, and cultures to thrive, not just survive amongst their neighbours, peers, and co-workers.
We are propelled by the belief that to enable a person to read and write and speak and perceive in a new language, a new way, or simply with renewed interest, is to light a soul ablaze with anticipation and excitement, and incite action toward happiness, fulfillment, and success. Each letter, number, sound, or insight learned is a spark, and each word, dawning realization, or brilliantly formulating idea a comforting and opportunistic flame by which to escape from the shackles of loneliness, frustration, poverty or distress, and an entrance to brighter and bolder horizons. We read, write, comprehend and communicate, and in doing so we know that we are not alone.
Tailored to each individual, our empathetic and collaborative approach is flexible and informal, adaptable and accommodating, inclusive, learner-led, and unquestionably human-centred.
Whether seen as a newcomer stumbling across cultural and language barriers, or unseen as a person long disconnected from the spoils of modern society due to former educational disenchantment, trauma, or a variety of other circumstances, the world can be yours for the reading and writing and facing and understanding.
