Community Resources
Assessing needs, challenges, and opportunities, Sturgeon Adult Learning works to build relationships between individual and group learners and the tailored support and mentorship programs they need to improve their reading, writing, speaking, financial, digital, or life skills—including comprehension, problem solving, and decision making. We build bridges to and between our member agencies, which provide resources, information and education for adults within the Sturgeon Region.
Overseeing our organization, the Sturgeon Adult Learning Council (SALC) has a strong history of securing Adult Learning Grants from the Government of Alberta to deliver high-quality, strength-based adult learning programs. Since 2018, SALC has been receiving funding through the Community Adult Learning Programs (CALP). The CALP grant aims to strengthen communities’ capacity to support the foundational learning of adult learners in Alberta, focusing on areas such as adult literacy, basic digital skills, English as an additional language, numeracy, and skills for learning.
Community Capacity Building
Community capacity building is the process of developing and strengthening the skills, resources, and abilities of individuals, groups, and organizations within a community. This enables them to effectively address local challenges, seize opportunities, and achieve shared goals. By fostering empowerment, collaboration, and sustainable development, capacity building helps create resilient communities where people are confident, knowledgeable, and connected.
At Sturgeon Adult Learning, we are committed to supporting community capacity building through education, training, resource sharing, and partnerships. Our approach includes:
Skill Development: Offering programs and workshops that build essential skills such as literacy, digital literacy, and basic daily numbers.
Supporting Diverse Learners: Promoting inclusion and acceptance by providing culturally responsive learning supports for Indigenous peoples, newcomers, and other cultural learners.
Advocacy and Empowerment: Encouraging self-advocacy and raising awareness about learning disabilities to better support the unique needs of learners.
Partnership and Collaboration: Working with local organizations, agencies, and community leaders to coordinate services and maximize impact.
Resource Accessibility: Providing access to information, technology, and safe spaces that support learning, engagement, and community connection.
Encouraging Participation: Creating inclusive environments where community members can actively contribute, share their voices, and take on leadership roles.
Through these initiatives, Sturgeon Adult Learning and the Sturgeon Adult Learning Council aim to strengthen the social and economic fabric of the community – helping individuals and groups overcome barriers and build a better future together.
